It's a classic. The majesty of Africa as backdrop, the characters played to perfection, the story so real that you feel every emotion possible. I was moved, I felt the joy and the sorrow, I felt the fear and the pain.

Absolutely amazing movie - Forest Whitaker's performance is outstanding - he hands down deserved the oscar. What I liked about this movie is that it was entertaining and educational - I learned a lot about Idi Amin and Uganda and also found the movie suspenseful and fun to watch. The co-star was excellent too.

Brilliant acting, very insightful, brutal, raw. Forest Whitaker deserved that Oscar. He portrays the dual nature of a despot gained by paranoia... Absolutely flawless.

Best movie I've seen in more than a year (with the lives of other) Painful and hard to watch because of all this violence. I'm so glad Whitaker got the oscar. His impersonation of the two sides of Idi Amin is really breathtaking: the joyful, generous dude who cracks jokes with anyone on the one hand, and the sick, paranoid mass murderer who can't handle his responsibilities as a head of state and throw his country into chaos on the other.

One of the best movies I've seen in a while. I'm glad Forest Whitaker won the Academy Award for his outstanding Idi Amin performance - always on the edge. I likes James McAvoy as well, kinda like a young Hugh Grant with hois Dackelblick.

I enjoyed this movie, FW gets everything he can out of his part and deserves all the acclaim --- but it might have been better with an actor with fewer film creds and more edge. The fictional Scot mini-doc... Well he's actually more real... Just his lines are a bit weak in part.

I am never sure why we must have such creative freedom in telling of historical events. The main character (the doctor) never existed in real life giving us false information on events that really happened. I also feel that the atrocities should be more in the foreground as this movie focuses more on a likeable character instead of seeing his true nature. Aside from that it is an entertaining movie but should be well indicated as being INSPIRED by and not BASED ON.

This is a powerful film. Lets us see the surface of a very dark, grim period in Uganda. Forces us to imagine what else was going on. An important film.

An excellent film... What movies are supposed to be. Forest Whitaker is mesmerizing, James MCavoy supports with stunning dignity. Masterfully acted, skillfully produced and directed, a must-see for political and world buffs, and for anyone concerned with the art of movies.

The actor playing idi Amin looked at times childish. Idi Amin never was. The truth was much scarier than this movie.

The Last King of Scotland tells the story of a young Irish doctor who becomes involved in another peoples conflict deep in the heart of Africa. His obliviousness to the true facts surrounding the leadership of Idi Amin is tempered only by his honest desire to help an oppressed and needy people.

Like a modern MacBeth, Idi Amin (Forrest Whittaker) seizes power, and then gradually becomes increasingly paranoid and murderous as he sees betrayers on every side. Whitaker deserved the Oscar for this one. He's uncannily believable as the former Ugandan president turned dictator turned madman. Although James MacAvoy turns in a fine performance as young Scottish graduate doctor Nicholas Garrigan, the movie belongs to Whitaker, who bluffs, laughs and thunders his way through the increasingly nightmarish world of 1970s Uganda. I don't think it's any coincidence that the movie is called the Last King of Scotland -- it parallels many aspects of That Scottish Play. Go. Don't wait. Go. Go now.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
I think Forest Whittakker's performance as Idi Amin is superb, one of the best acting jobs since Dustin Hoffman played the autistic fellow in 'Rainman". I also think that it ought to be emphasized that this is a story, not based but simply inspired by, real people, times and events. It is not a rendering of history or an accurate portrayal of a regime. It is probably a very accurate portrayal of a charming psychopath, which Idi Amin undoubtedly was. I thought the movie lacked the historical context (why were Obote's men and Amin's regime fighting, for instance, why did the dicator pick on people from certain tribes? ) A lot of people in N. America remain completely ignorant of causes of conflict and bloodshed in Africa, whether in Uganda or otherwise. This film gives us a gripping story with great acting but it does not shed much light on "why" things happened the way they happened. Also, some of the alleged atrocities committed by Amin's people were fabricated to dramatize the film (like, he never has one of his wives killed and her body disfigured, etc) Why not show more of the background situation?

All I can say is WOW! What a great movie. I'm not a Forrest Whitaker fan, but he certainly desreved the oscar hats off to him. I laughed, was shocked and in suspense. *Warning there is some graphic violence* Loved it from beginning to end. It was nice to see Gillian Anderson again hadn't seen her since X-Files.

Forest Whitaker must get an oscar for this performance! His fellow actors were incredible as well! The story line just kept building momentum until the crescendo. The fact that this is based on the true life of Idi Amin makes the story even more spectacular! The producers & directors of this movie should also be acknowledged at awards time. Kudo's to absolutely everyone involved in this film. I wish I could have seen it in a large, surround sound theatre instead of a dingy, older theater but I guess they thought the masses no longer enjoy truthful, thought provoking movies over inane, brainless fare such as Borat. I will go to any theatre to see Forest Whitaker because he is the embodiment of what a real actor is & he chooses his roles carefully so I am guaranteed to enjoy his work regardless of the format. Definitely a must see!!!

An excellent movie based on historical facts-I was in Uganda and actually met Amin and Obote... Amin was the charmer even then. He deposed Obote shortly after I left. Its a pity they made so much of Dr Carrigan (a composite but fictional character) but Forest Whitaker's performance as Idi Amin Dada is superb and definitely Oscar worthy-I hope he wins it. Although dramatised to a certain extent, no doubt to appeal to audiences, there is a lot of accurate if sometimes understated fact in this movie. Go see it-you wont be sorry.

Forest Whitaker deserves an Oscar for his performance. Because it was based mainly on facts, that's why I wanted to see it. If you like history, go for it. As far as the title, I would have choosen a different one.

A great tale and a wonderful movie. Forest Whitaker should win the Oscar for his portrayal of Amin. Unfortunately not historically accurate. Why they chose not to impart Israel's role in Amin's saga perpetuates the myth that Amin was insane and perpetrated these brutal acts without provocation. This Leaves the audience to view him as the two dimensional character the British, the Americans and especially the Israelis hoped to portray him as.

It is really a 6.5, but I had to balance the sheets. Again, I am disappointed to learn more about a European protagonist, than a REAL life dark character in Amin. I emphasize REAL as I think the fictional nature of this doctor throws the whole movie off. The story should revolve around Amin, not some Scot (and his womanizing skills) At lease make the man the real Scot military man that he is and write a better story. Whitaker is amazing, this real life dictator is not.

The worst movie ever made, the only point to this movie it to suck 2 hours from your life. The characters are empty the only people to feel sorry for are the Ugandans and the people who paid to watch the movie.

"The Last King of Scotland' is intense. Forest Whitaker is, as I had heard, riveting in his performance as the dictator. I was also very impressed by James McAvoy's acting. His character's youth and naivete is believable and inevitably leads him into danger... I wanted so badly for him to be able to escape the grasp of the oppressor and thus am still recovering from the trauma of witnessing the last few scenes! A highly recommended film -- but only if you can bear some extreme violence.

Forest Whitaker's chillingly charming, coldly calculating and evil recreation of Amin, hold the viewer's attention to the last moments of the film. James McAvoy portrays the innocence and arrogance of youth perfectly. The performances are worth the price of admission. The cinematic presentation is flawless. It portrays the story of a mad dictator and the interweaving of events in a engaging way..
